Why Are My Windshield Wipers Streaking?

What Causes Windshield Wiper Streaking?

When driving in a storm, the best defense we have against the onslaught of rain is the windshield wipers. They must be working well; otherwise, it’s difficult to see the road, which is extremely dangerous. If your wipers are streaking when moving across the windshield, keep reading. The information below will help you get to the root of the problem and offer solutions.

1. Worn or Damaged Wiper Blades

Blades wear down due to various factors, specifically those associated with the environment. Things like extreme temperatures, sunlight, road debris, and moisture all affect your wiper blades. Add in the natural deterioration of the rubber, and it seems everything is coming after your wiper blades.

Ice can also damage wipers, and they can break down from the constant rubbing against the windshield. These are just a few of the many ways a wiper can become damaged or worn, leading to streaking.

2. Dirty Windshield

If your windshield has a buildup of grime, dirt, or road film, the wipers won’t be able to clean it effectively. This can lead to streaking. The rain may wash away the dirt that’s streaking, but even a moment of blindness behind the wheel is a risk. Wiping your windshield with a good cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth should fix this issue.

3. Wiper Arm Issues

If the wiper arm is weak or rusty, or if the springs are deteriorating, they may lack the strength needed to apply pressure to the windshield. When this happens, the blades can lift, which leaves streaks. Damaged arms often need to be replaced, and a reputable auto glass company can handle this for you.

4. Windshield Imperfections

Are there any chips or small cracks in your windshield? Imperfections can cause streaking. If that’s the case with your vehicle, we highly recommend having your windshield inspected by a professional auto glass technician. Some small chips can be repaired inexpensively.

Once a small chip begins to spread—something that’s inevitable—you may need to replace the entire windshield. That’s why it’s crucial to take care of windshield damage as soon as you notice it.

5. Cheap Blades

Some things are worth spending a little extra on, and wiper blades are one of them. Cheap blades can be made of stiff materials that don’t follow the contour of the windshield exactly. This can leave streaks and even cause a squeaking noise. When choosing a blade, you want high-quality wipers designed to fit your vehicle’s windshield properly.

How Often Should I Change My Wipers?

Experts suggest replacing windshield wipers every six to twelve months. If they’ve reached their expiration date, you should contact a reputable auto glass company to have them changed. If they’re not that old but are streaking, we suggest having a professional look at them. Maybe only the blades need to be replaced, which is better than replacing an old or rusted arm.

What Are Other Signs of Worn Wipers?

Streaking is a good sign that your wipers need to be changed, but there are other signs you might notice as well.

  • Poor Visibility: If you can’t see out the windshield when driving through a downpour, that’s a good sign that you need new wipers.

  • Smearing: Just like streaking, smearing can limit the driver’s visibility, which is never safe.

  • Skipping or Chattering: If the wipers jump, skip, or move erratically when turned on, they may need to be replaced.
